Underoath is a Christian Metalcore band that originated in Ocala, Florida. Spencer Chamberlain explains, “We’re not like your average Christian band." He further explains that Christianity is the "backbone of our lives, especially in the way that we handle certain things, but it’s not so much the backbone of our lyrics. It’s not like every song is a lesson from the Bible or something. It’s just normal life struggles."
Underoath mostly plays melodic metalcore currently. When Underoath began in 1997, the band played a much different style which was described as melodic death metal and deathcore.

On November 30, 1997 in Ocala, Flordia, Underoath formed with Dallas Taylor and Luke Morton. Aaron Gillespie later joined as the drummer as well as Corey Steger on guitar and Octavio Fernandez on bass. At this point all members were still in high school. Underoath toured and played around Florida until 1999 when they signed with Take Hold Records. Underoath recorded their first album “Act of Depression”, selling 2000 copies. Luke Morton left the band before they recorded. In 2000, Underoath added a keyboardist to their lineup, Chris Dudley. Underoath released their next album “Cries of the past” shortly after, selling 3000 copies.

Takehold records who signed Underoath was bought out by Tooth and Nail Records, and Underoath was then signed to Solid State Records. In January 2002, Grant Brandell joined Underoath replacing Octavio Fernandez. On February 26, 2002 The Changing of Times was released, but got a lot of criticism from former Underoath fans. In 2003, Underoath played on their first Vans Warped tour. However, they did not get to finish the tour because Dallas Taylor was asked to leave the band. Spencer Chamberlain replaced Dallas Taylor after a while as lead vocalist. After he left, the members of the band considered making a new band with a new name.

The band took some time off to crate their new album and “They're Only Chasing Safety” was released on June 15, 2004. After the release of “They’re only chasing safety” Underoath toured for a while with the “Taste of chaos” tour and their own headlining tour. Underoath made 2 music videos and one, “writing on the walls” which won an award for “best short form music video.” Their next album “define the great line” was released June 20, 2006 and was highest debut for a Christian album since 1997. While touring, Underoath had to drop out due to “friendship problems”, needing to discuss religious views, and drug addictions. Their next album “lost in the sound of separation” was released September 2, 2008.
